Who are we?

Shimbukai Cambodia was launched in 2015 by Renshi Andy Kent (5th Dan) and focuses on the following class types:

  • Traditional Goju-Ryu karate

  • Karate based fitness/HPE

  • Karate based self-defense (ungraded)

  • Seminars and interschool competitions and events

We believe in:

  • Kata and Bunkai as the core basis of karate

  • Holistic development of the body and mind

  • The dojo should be a place of safety, learning, and peace

Shimbukai Karate and all of its instructors are committed to the safety and wellbeing of all students. Students are prohibited from practicing contact kimute (sparring) until they have proven their ability to do so in a controlled and safe manner.

Renshi Andy Kent
5th Dan Goju Ryu
4th Dan Shotokan
Renshi Andy is the chief instructor and technical director of Shimbukai Cambodia.
He has been studying karate since 2001 and won a several gold medals in Australia, also competing in the 2007 GKR World Cup. Renshi Andy moved to Cambodia in 2009. He has been teaching karate in Phnom Penh since 2015.

Sensei Chhay Kimsour
2nd Dan Goju Ryu
The wife of Renshi Andy, she has been training since 2014 and primarily focuses on training younger students. She also serves as the country director for Shimbukai Cambodia.

Sensei Chhay Meng
2nd Dan Goju Ryu
Sensei Meng has been training since 2015 and specializes in teaching Kata and Kihon.

Sensei Sarel Myburgh
1st Dan Goju Ryu
Sensei Sarel has been training in Goju Ryu with Shimbukai since 2022, but has experience in Goju Kai and Shotokan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to buy a uniform?
We require students to train in uniforms, however if students already have a uniform (eg. from a previous class), they may wear that. Trial students can train without a uniform, but need to wear comfortable sports wear.
Can I have a free trial?
We are open to a trial lesson, please contact us to discuss.
Do you offer private lessons?
Yes, please contact for pricing and details.
I can't join on Sundays. Can I join on any other days?
Some partner schools, like CIA FIRST Chbar Ampov, allow outside students to join their internal ECAs. Please contact your nearest school to find out.
